Club Road Race Championship Standings 2008

The first event of the club’s road race championships took place at Banbury yesterday. The Banbury 15 course is not flat by any stretch of the imagination, and it does provide a stiff challenge particularly in the cold and blustery conditions that prevailed on the day.

A field of 294 runners completed the Banbury 15 course this year. This is traditionally the opening event of our club’s road race championship season. This year the the event was won by Paul Andrew of Northbrook AC in a time of 1:24:03. Sophie Dawson of Kidlington R&AC was the first lady to cross the line in atime of 1:38:02 finishing in 25th place overall.

Jason Cooke got off to a solid start in this year’s championship leading the Harrier contingent across the line finishing in 17th place just finishing ahead of Chris Wilder who came home in 20th place. Lucia Singer, our sole lady representative, was next finishing in 74th, followed by Simon Atkin (95th), Mike Smith (104th) and Jeremy Smeddle (162nd).

In the men’s team event our first four finishers – Jason, Chris, Simon and Mike – saw the Harriers to a very creditable top ten place finishing in ninth position behind Cherwell Runners & Joggers (1st), Woodstock Harriers (2nd) and Alchester Rc (3rd). In the ladies’ team event Banbury Harriers AC held off Alchester RC and Witney RR to record their victory.
